Disaster Preparedness Committee

The City's Disaster Preparedness Committee (DPC) has been in place since November of 1998. The goal of the Committee, consisting of representatives from City departments, is to design and implement training to ensure that staff will be prepared for a disaster. Training focuses on the responsibilities each department has in the event of a major disaster as well as helping the community to recover from such an event.

Over the last three years, the Committee has accomplished many facets of this goal. 2001 was a particularly productive year. Members of the DPC attended a workshop on Emergency Operations Center functions and designed a new layout for the City's EOC. The Committee conducted three tabletop exercises to familiarize all departments with the operations conducted in the EOC. City staff participated in the Red Cross Disaster Academy held at Cal State Fullerton. California Specialized Training Institute (CSTI) conducted a workshop for the City's Public Information Officers.

Ann Shultz, the City's Chief PIO, established a Committee of PIOs to design a public information process for the City in the event of a disaster. An Exercise Design Sub-committee comprised of DPC members designed and conducted a functional exercise on November 13, 2008. City staff coordinated and participated in Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Floor Leader, and Search & Rescue training. The City's volunteer amateur radio group, MESAC, participated in all aspects of the aforementioned effort, and were instrumental in moving our programs forward.
